This was my first individual forest race, and although I was initially really nervous when I found out I’d be running a WOC long, I knew that I had put in a lot of physical training over the past year and that I was as prepared as I was going to be. I started the race excited to run in the forest again and to hopefully be cleaner than in the relay. My goal coming in to this race was to take my time: the long is a long race, it’s worth spending a few extra seconds to pick the best route, and feeling rushed in the relay had led to mistakes. My first 8 controls went really well: I was navigating mostly cleaning and picking good routes. Unfortunately, I over-simplified at control 9 and lost track of any estimate of distance while going through green. I lost a lot of time going out of the way to a similar feature, but I figured out what I had done and got going again. It’s always hard to get that same motivation back after a big mistake, and I had a few more small bobbles, but no other big problems for the rest of the race. I didn’t take one round-a-bout route that I should have taken (9-10), but I did take a similar round-a-bout route at the end of the race (15-16) and gained a couple of minutes compared with other people of similar speeds. I ended in 61st place, and although I’m frustrated by my mistake, I’m happy with the rest of the race.

Greg:
This wasn't a good long for me, but it wasn't a bad one either. I was perhaps a bit too conservative at the beginning, aiming to avoid hills, forest running, and green as much as possible. The forest was much more runnable than the training maps and I should have adjusted to be more aggressive. However, I was still concerned about hitting the wall after the spectator passage. So I shot for a medium-hard pace and routes where I could run fast but not get as tired.

In hindsight, I likely could have taken straighter routes and come out fine. A significant problem is still my Achilles tendon and heel. It began to hurt midway through and I was a bit apprehensive about running up and down the hills the whole way. I've got to take time to let it rest. I've been pushing that off for too long.

For now, I've just got to make it through NAOC with solid performances and then I can give my body a break.

Tomorrow is the WOC relay and Team USA is getting ready.

The women start first at 14:20 (7:20 am on the East Coast). The women's team is Ali, Tori, and Amanda in that order.

The men will take to the woods at 16:20 (9:20 am on the East Coast). The men's team is Anton, Greg, and Eric in that order.

It'll be an exciting day of racing, but temperatures are forecast to be very warm at 32C (90F). So we've asked the men's alternate, Giacomo to be ready to race and to spray the runners with water in the coaching zone. Of course, we had to practice our technique...
Team USA had a good day in the middle with Ali coming in 40th and Anton coming in 55th.

Here are Ali's comments about the race:
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: medium; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">

I started very early (4th starter) and knew I’d have a chance to finish first if everything went well. Happily, my race did go very well! I raced very consistently, with no real mistakes – just one route choice error and a few hesitations close to the circle which were solved with a quick map glance or just looking around. I am totally happy with the result – my goal was top-45 (the equivalent of making the final back in the day) and came through with a 40th place!

The terrain felt not too foreign – the vegetation is about what you might expect in New England over the summer (so green and thick, but possible to get through if you work at it). Although the contour features are more like Ohio, without much rock detail at all. But the orienteering at least felt familiar, which was a really nice! I used my compass well and pace counting on around 5 controls. The pacecounting really boosted my confidence when I used it and kept me moving fast when I otherwise might have slowed down to look for the control to early.

It was fun to be the first competitor to almost all the controls and through the arena and then finish. The event officials wanted to get my feedback as soon as I finished. They knew all the controls were there for sure because of the prerunners (and there are people watching each of them), but I think they just wanted to hear how a WOC athlete found the course. Think I gave a pretty favorable report, perhaps biased by having had a good race. =)

I went to cool down and then returned to the team tent where I watched my name at the top of the results board until the Finn, Henna Riikka Haikonen took the lead. After that I kept pretty consistently getting bumped down from there. I still find it astounding that someone could do the course almost 10 minutes faster than I did, but I can at least think about how the next few minutes might be gained here and there!

Here's what Anton had to say about his race:

I had a smooth good start, first 3 controls without difficulties, just with a slower pace so I could keep my orienteering together. Going to #4, I was a bit unsure of what to expect and that's why I ended up stopping twice and going too low before the control, +1min.

Then on #6 I was going way too high instead of going a bit down and so I ended up searching it 100m to the right, +1.10min. After that my orienteering was flowing well, tho should have left #6 straight up to the road instead of going on the level to the trail.

Then at #7 the Australian Matt Doyle caught up to me and followed me until #8. After that he started running really hard so we caught up to the Portuguese Ricardo Ferreira. Matt kept that fast pace over the bridge until the drink stop. Once I was done with the drink, I lead the train to 11 and almost until 12. Then Matt took the lead again and I just couldn't keep up with them. Tried to recatch them on the way to the spectator loop in the uphill from #14 but the flat part after was just too fast for me.

I tried to read the last loop ahead on the spectator shoot but just totally failed it. At #16 I was not focused, I didn't read my map well at all so I just couldn't make sense of the control circle, +1.30min.

After that it was just a fight against the brutal hills at the end of the course. And it was really brutal, I don't remember a time when I would have walked to the last control...

Eric enjoyed the course since he "likes faster sprints, and this was definitely a fast course." He didn't perform as well as he had hoped, but he corrected well and his "teammates came through and we had a solid result!"
As I write this, the athletes running the long distance are heading into quarantine and there is a moment of calm before the actual race begins. The weather is pretty miserable for spectators but should make for nice cool conditions for our intrepid orienteers.

For team USA, Alex Jospe will be the first out on the course. She has blogged about her WOC experience so far on her personal blog which you can find here . To quote from her write-up:

"My plan is again to focus on the navigation - Take the good micro-routes and choose the right macro-routes, dance across those open rocks and tumble across the cliffs like I have wings on my Inov-8s. Today, there is nothing I would rather be doing, and no place I'd rather be doing it! No matter how I finish in the results, I want to finish knowing that I ran a good race, proud of my effort and my navigation."

The next American in the forest will be Samantha Saeger. Sam lives in Uppsala, Sweden and has been looking to this race for a long time. She raced the middle distance on Tuesday, and bashed her knee into a rock during the race. The swelling was causing a bit of pain and discomfort during her training yesterday, but this morning she reports that the knee feels much better and at least this observer could not see any overt limping :) Go get 'em Sam!

For the men, Eric Bone will be running. At 11:50, he has just departed for the quarantine zone, with mere minutes to spare before the 12:00 deadline. As longtime followers will appreciate, this is a sign that Eric is right on schedule. This is not his first rodeo, and he thrives on getting to the start with minimal standing around time.

As a preview of what the map and terrain might hold, I will leave you with a map from our training session yesterday. The GPS track belongs to yours truly, team member Ross Smith.
Alex was our closest, 18th in her heat and only 15s back from qualifying position. No big mistakes, but she says, "I'm very proud of the first three quarters and I'd like a redo on the last 25%." That's a sentiment shared by several on the team, I think. (Alex wants to add that she's really excited to get into the forest.)

The course looked challenging and fun from the sidelines, taking people into the rocky coastal area after a lot of fast city running.

Ross: "I was pretty satisfied with my navigation and I never lost contact with the map. I missed the last (long) route choice. My speed isn't currently at the level needed to make it to the final but I'm very satisfied on a personal level."

An an extra pat on the back is in order for Will Enger, who got through his first WOC race with a smile.

The team is headed back to the city now for the Opening Ceremony and Sprint Final.Cristinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845032386304445844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9051187720896856652.post-75967675145331297372016-08-19T17:11:00.001-04:002016-08-19T17:11:39.561-04:00Sprint sprint sprint! The World Orienteering Champs kick off tomorrow with the Sprint Qualification and Sprint Final races.
The runners will be divided into three heats and the top fifteen from each heat will move on to the afternoon's final. The races are short (13-15 minutes for the winners) and take place in the urban area of Strömstad itself.

After the early morning events everyone running a sprint event headed into the embargoed area for a look about. Yes, you read that right! The city has been completely off-limits since November but was open for walking this morning between nine and noon. The preparation for sprint races at the top is getting fairly sophisticated, with teams making sprint maps at home with the help of online maps and street photographs. It seems strange to be able to visit the terrain the day before the race, but really most of the athletes have been studying the streets of Strömstad for months.

After the city walk it was time for the sprint model and technical model, giving the athletes a chance to see what the maps/terrain, controls sites, and start procedures would be like.

The day wrapped up with a team meeting, as usual, covering logistics for the day ahead, tidbits people learned from today's exploration, and sharing goals and positive thoughts for the upcoming race. There's a nervous excitement in the Team USA cabins now, but the overall attitude is that we are ready for action!
WOC begins on Saturday with the sprint qualification in the morning and the sprint final, for those who qualify, in the afternoon. (See the whole program.)

This year's team:

WOMEN
Hannah Culberg (QOC)
Alex Jospe (CSU)
Kseniya Popova (HVO)
Samantha Saeger (NEOC / OK Linne)
Hillary Saeger (NEOC)

MEN
Giacomo Barbone (CSU)
Eric Bone (COC)
Will Enger (COC)
Ross Smith (CSU / OK Linne)

Cristina Luis is with the team as Team Leader, making sure the team gets to where they need to go, on time with enough food in their belly.

Sweden is 6 hours ahead of the east coast of the US, but as most of the program this year takes place in the afternoon there's no need for American fans to wake up in the middle of the night to follow the action!
The first race of WUOC was this morning, and there were some mixed results from our team. The women’s race was 3.3k with 115m of climb and 21 control points. The guys had 3.6k with 120m of climb and 23 controls. The terrain was essentially two flat areas connected by a steep hillside with hanging gardens. It was a completely urban area. Giacomo and Tori had strong runs today, coming in 71st and 37th respectively, only four and three minutes back from the leader. Alison had a solid race placing 56th with a time of 21:37, five minutes back. Evalin had a strong race today, however she accidently ran through the forbidden area along the river near control number five. She would’ve finished with around the same time as Tori. The three West Point runners, Sam, Will, and Trey were thrown into a very challenging, first international race today! They learned a few new things about races from their mistakes, and are excited about implementing them later this week.
We lucked out with the weather today: It only started really raining after all of the Americans had finished. After the races, the team grabbed some lunch at the arena and tried to stay dry. The runners who will be racing the sprint relay on tuesday headed into town to check out the terrain for the sprint relay. After returning to the hotel, Trey, Will, and Sam headed to the pool to cool down, and everyone else headed to dinner. Tomorrow is the long! Watch for Alison, Isabel, Michael, Trey, Will, and Giacomo.
Spectators watching the coverage of the Sprint Final may have missed Alison Crocker's impressive performance on Sunday in Forres, Scotland where she ran her way into 15th place, the best individual result ever achieved by the US at the World Championships. Ali was largely overlooked by the video coverage and arena announcing and thus her fantastic result was a surprise, even to her.

In the moments after finishing she explained that she had a small mistake on the second control but was satisfied with the rest of her race. The mistake occurred when she misread the control description, and expected the flag to be at the end of the wrong stone wall. She figures she lost 20 seconds there, and after that she really pushed hard with nothing to lose. When she crossed the line with several runners still to finish, she thought that she would be satisfied to finish in the top 30. The final result of 15 was a bit of a surprise.
Ali's next race will be the Forest Relay on Wednesday, August 5th. However, you can watch Team USA compete in the Middle Distance on Tuesday.
Today's Sprint Qualification took place in the town of Forres, a town lying
to the East of Inverness. The action started with the Women's heats with US
runners Kseniya, Alex and Ali racing through the residential area around the town.

There were plenty of familiar faces in the crowd of spectators watching from
the arena and also a couple that had official positions. Valerie was working
her magic in the download tent and Sandy was out on the course, guarding a set
of fence crossings that were created by stacking hay bales into a rough set of
stairs. This spot was a great spot to spectate, as every heat had a long leg
route choice going past her position. All in all, there was a great atmosphere
for cheering on Team USA!

Kseniya, had the first start of the Americans, and she raced her course in
16:52, a performance that landed her in 29th place in heat 2. She said that she
ran well, and was happy to have finished without any big mistakes. She was 3:21
behind the leader, Tove Alexandersson (SWE) and 1:37 seconds behind 15th
position in heat 2.

Next to start was Alex, running in heat 3. She had a time of 15:47, which
was good enough for 21st place. She said that she did have a small error of
running down a blind alley for a couple of seconds, but overall she was fairly
happy with the run. Alex was 2:02 behind the winner in heat 3, Minna Kaupi
(FIN) and a mere 34 seconds behind 15th position.
which meant that when she finished, the annoucer, Per Forsberg could say with
certainty that she was fast enough to make it through to the final! She
finished in 6th position in heat 1, with a time of 13:40. Less than a minute
behind the winner, Maya Alm (DEN). Ali was satisfied with her run and happy to
qualify. This was her 6th WOC sprint qualification race and her 5th time making
it through to the finals.

There was only a short break in the action before the men's race commenced.
Scotland apparently decided that things were far too pleasant, and as soon as
the women finished running, a light rain started to fall. This meant that the
US men, Ken, Greg, and Ethan were running in a light cool drizzle.

Ken finished 30th in heat 3, with a time of 15:29. 3:01 behind the leader
Jerker Lysell (SWE) and 2:10 behind 15th spot. He was happy with his run and
was greeted by a happy fan club including his very supportive daughters,
Samantha and Elisa. Their opinion that Dad was still the best is a very popular
one with this reporter as well. Ken narrowly edged out Canadian Robbie
Anderson, who reportedly was suffering from a certain amount of gastric
distress during the later part of the course and made a bee line for the
port-a-potty as soon as he crossed the finish line.

Next to the finish was Greg in heat 1. He finished 29th with a time of
14:32. The fastest time in his heat was the jaw-dropping 11:48 set by Yannick
Michiels (BEL). Greg was 1:51 outside of qualifying and said that he was
perhaps too amped up with the excitement of the race and the speed of using the
SI Air. He ran right past the flag on control #2 without ever going to punch.
Luckily he realized this and went back to correct it. Overall he thought he
might have had 30 seconds of error and was still pretty excited to have just
finished his first WOC race ever. Greg raced in a heat where running the
expected winning time of 13 minutes would not have qualified for a spot in the
final.
Canadian Will Critchley created a very loud cheering spectacle in the arena.
Ethan logged the fastest time of the men, finishing in 30th position in heat 2
in a time of 13:58. The winner in his heat Kristian Jones (GBR) ran 11:44.
Ethan was 1:20 outside of qualification and he too was in a heat where merely

Hello Dear Readers! What better way to welcome you to
Scotland than to provide you with a picture of the beautiful countryside. I am
posting this after I drove north to join Team USA in Inverness, for the World
Orienteering Championships. Over the next several days, I will be acting as the
team leader for Team USA and bringing you updates from the athletes and the
arena as the races progress.

Team USA is here in Inverness poised and ready for the first
competition, which kicks off tomorrow, Friday, July 31. For an overview of the
WOC week, look no further than the incredible post over at World of O, where
Jan Kocbach has compiled a bunch of resources that will keep you close to the
action. I will highlight in particular the link for the official IOF onlinecoverage. It is possible to buy a single (10€) or a weeklong pass (18€) and
watch video and GPS tracking for all the races. Furthermore, it will be
possible to post on Attackpoint! forums to interact with your fellow spectators,
just be fairly warned that very little of what tRicky posts is serious.
